Engineering Launch – Term 3

Yesterday we walked into class to walk back out as the teacher hustled us to the hall right behind Room 11.

In the Hall, we found white bags all over the floor and Whaea Peta started talking to us about Engineering and our focus for this term.

Prediction:

We all hoped our eggs would survive.

Materials:

Check our result to see these as we were all given the same items but we didn’t all choose to use them all.

Method:

I walked around taking photos. While student discussed their plan.

  1. Discuss the plan to protect their egg.
  2. Build our egg protection
  3. Modify the contraption we made to protect our egg.
  4. Test by dropping the experiments from the second floor in the hall. (Mezzanine)

Fair testing Procedure

We all had the same materials to start, we all dropped our experiment from the same place and they landed on the black plastic. We were encouraged to drop it from the same height. However one group had a lot of string so it didn’t fall as far and a couple of groups tried moving their parachute side to side before dropping, trying to fill it with air.

Results:

What is Engineering

We have an opportunity at the local high school to work with Year 9 and 10 students to complete a range of STEAM projects with a focus on Engineering.

As a class, we checked out Careers NZ with a focus on Engineering we then picked 5 career options and had to investigate them further. My questions were:

What does an engineer do?

How much did they make?

What do I need to know? or do to be an engineer?

Where can I study to be an engineer?

This is the beginning of my project.

What would you like to know about engineering?
