Angles with Scratch

Talofa Lava

We are learning to add angles to make 180 degrees. In Scratch the sprite (cat) moves along a straight line (180 degrees). We had to code the sprite to make a square, triangle and a circle. Then we had to learn how to add the code to make it say the shape name. We use the pen code to draw the shapes.

Have you used Scratch for Maths?

Fractions

We have been learning about Fractions, then we had to add and subtract fractions but remembering the demoniator must be the same. Do you know which is the dominator?

Rocket Challenge – Mission 1

We are participating in the Wonder Projects’ Rocket Challenge.

On Wednesday we met the Ambassadors, and learnt how to be STEM thinkers. Ask, Imagine, Create and Improve.Today we had to ask questions and set a goal.

Here are the questions from the Ask task that Room 1 came up with…

What would you ask?

ANZAC

We did a treasure hunt and had to find the main point from 11 different cards. We all had one card and then share back and were expect to say “I can add to that, my card says …”

This is the information we came up with and then had to create our own presentation to teach others about ANZAC.

Here is the information we found out

ANZAC Day

  1. Poppies: People wear Poppies that are red to symbolise ANZAC
  2. ANZAC day, people remember soldiers by going to an early morning service
  3. The Military fought and died for their country, many soldiers were badly injured during the war.
  4. There are 3 parts to the military Army, Navy and Air force.
  5. The first ANZAC day was in 1916, war started 1914.
  6. ANZAC day is a day to remember soldiers who fought in a war (but started after WW1)
  7. Anzac is now about remembering anyone who fought in war
  8. Dawn service they use special music and reading to remember
  9. Early morning services are held at war memorials to remember people who died at war
  10. ANZAC day is way for people to remember relatives and friends who service in the military
  11. Ceremonies are held at dawn to remember the history of ANZAC and war

We highlighted those that could go together like lines

ANZAC = Australia and New Zealand Army Corps

Dawn parades have special music and a reading to remember fall soldiers, like relatives, friends and friends of relatives who died at war. Dawn means really early morning.

Nominators and Denominators

Assalamu alaikum,

Fractions are part of a set or a whole. E.g. if you cut an apple into 2 even pieces you have cut it in half 1/2

Do you know what nominators and denominators are?

Denominators are not big and bossy, they are the total amount, nominators show the part of the totals.

We also learnt how to add and subtract fractions – the bottom number the denominator has to be the same. Have you tried adding 3/4 of an apple to 1/3 of an apple, it is not possible.

A few of My Favourite Things

For our Cybersmart Challenge to day we had to create a poster about ourselves. We had to show we know the difference between private and public information. This is information we are happy to share publicly such as our favourite sports, hobbies. I love this image of Room 1 in our new Gate – Gateway to Dreams. We all emjoy sports of different kinds and have dreams for our future. We also all love to read.

It was hard trying to find images and hobbies we all enjoy, but if you check out the students blogs you can find out more about them.

Whakawhanaungatanga – Team Building in Action

Today was the save day for our trip unfortunately we couldn’t do all the tasks that were planned and we had to do them at school.

First Aid – we discussed what goes into a first aid kit, then the teacher hid the items and we had to work with a partner to list or draw the 14 things.

Kite Making  – In Room 2 we had to think about the shape, cut it out. Taped forks on to make it stronger then decorated using vivids and we could add tassles.

Rakau titiorea – We watched a video and had to copy the actions.

It was a lot of fun but our teacher forgot to take photos during the event.

What do YOU Value?

Kia Ora

At Edmund Hillary School we value everyone and we stand by 4 school Values. Our Values are Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga, Kaitiakitanga, and Rangatiratanga. We practiced the mosaic design around the edge and had to explain what they mean to us.

In my family, I grew up believing in God and loving your neighbour more than yourself and the value of working hard and the lord will provide.

Our values started like this

After some mosaic patterns and using the gradient paint tool to make it look fancy.

We then cheated and use the second one as a template for the other four values can you see how we changed them?

A clue is it is not just the colour or words.
