The last two weeks we have been working on our speeches about Whenua.
Some of the important things in preparation for speaking was OREO – State our opinion, give a reason and evidence a few time then our conclusion (opinion). This was also important for a Speech Presentation.

Others in our school did Spoken Word and use rhyme and had rhythm in their presentation. No did Rap and no one did flash talk.
What I found tricky was standing still, and speaking clearly, looking at the audience was petrifying and remembering what I was to say.
Have you ever made a speech? How did you go?
Our teacher says she still remembers her first speech at High School and her knees were knocking and she said she mumbled too.

Some of our Senior Students waiting patiently for there turn.
Check out our student blogs to see some videos.

We have been learning about who we are, our culture and what makes us special/unique/important.
We interviewed each other to get to know our classmates better. We created a wall about ourselves. Played and did activities together to build teamwork like our Rangatiratanga Cloak. We did ‘About Me’ in drawings. and Write an Acrostic Poem using alliteration.

After creating a word a find, we used the same words to create a crossword, no not a grumpy word in sight. The challenge was writing clues that people could solve but not too easy – people can eat it could apply to so many things, lobster, oysters, kina… So that was one we tried to stay away from.
Thanks Treyden for the idea to embed the crossword into the blog.
Howdy,
Today is our first chance to do the Summer Learning Journey Activities, in class. Yes, it was a busy week Monday the Year 8s went to the High School for orientation. Yesterday we had to sort our drives and finish any work from last week or our blog posts in drafts.
We looked at Kiri’s tasks, the word find. We started with brainstorming words about the Moana. It was great I could model but then the students couldn’t access it as N4L had blocked the site. We tried the crossword instead, using the same words.
Here is the find a word we did as a class –
If you want to try it click here
It was neat seeing the computer show the answers. I am curious to know if the words are always in the same place, leave a comment please.
This week we are focusing on the Word Lab and Ponder.
We are learning about Hyperbole, another name is Exaggeration. Here is the one I picked to explain.

This is an exaggeration because we can lose a pencil or clothing. But to lose your mind you would need to take it out of your head and take out your mind, that is in this sense of the word lose.
For the Ponder, we had to think about whether these statements are more likely to be true?
Which do you think?
Today we had the challenge of transporting a liquid from one side of the courts to another using a paper cup. There was a lot of excitement and chatter. The race was on, and we had one minute to see how much water we could get in our cream container. we then stopped and predicted how long it would take to fill the container. Most containers were a 1/3 full after 1 minute. One group thought they would need another 20 minutes.
Here is the DLO we have to complete
It is taking us longer to read than we thought. So instead of being up to Chapter 14 we have made it to Chapter 8
WALT: Figure out what is the 6 most important values.
This week for Room 9’s ponder we had to work together and discuss what values we think are the best and then order them. We also had to discuss which one was the less important and delete values that we didn’t want. Me and my group had discussed that we picked freedom on the top because we thought the reason why we picked freedom is that we thought that if we picked it there would be more freedom in this world since New Zealand is just filled with robbers, fighters, and also gangsters. So we picked freedom so that people could be free from abusive relationships, then for the last one, we picked determination because we thought if we did that one last then people would agree with us, and they did !! If we had picked determination as the top then it would make no sense because people around us wouldn’t agree with us, the reason for that is that most people all around the world are already using the word determination.
Here is a screenshot of our work.

We are reading The Mazer Runner as a class and have a range of tasks to complete each week.
The first thing we did was the Ponder… What is worse…

I think ‘Remembering things but having no names or faces or places ‘ because you would feel lost not knowing where you had been or where you are going. Confused, because you have part memories but things are missing. Alone because don’t remember family and friends but you have a feeling of relationship but lost and no longer belonging. Scared because you have strangers around and uncertainty.
Our Word Lab task was to explain one of two metaphors. Metaphors compare things to another, imagine your teacher came back to school and someone said she was a real bear after the holidays, they would be saying she is grumpy.
We talked about the ‘lightless lift that swayed back and forth as it ascended. First, we talked about specific words lightless which means not light dark, ascending is the opposite of descending which means going down.
For each chapter we have to answer a question as part of the Novel Study.
Yesterday we walked into class to walk back out as the teacher hustled us to the hall right behind Room 11.
In the Hall, we found white bags all over the floor and Whaea Peta started talking to us about Engineering and our focus for this term.
We all hoped our eggs would survive.
Check our result to see these as we were all given the same items but we didn’t all choose to use them all.
I walked around taking photos. While student discussed their plan.
We all had the same materials to start, we all dropped our experiment from the same place and they landed on the black plastic. We were encouraged to drop it from the same height. However one group had a lot of string so it didn’t fall as far and a couple of groups tried moving their parachute side to side before dropping, trying to fill it with air.
